Passenger ferry services from Taşucu in southern Turkey to northern Cyprus have been cancelled following the fatal sinking of Filo Jet.
A notice issued by Taşucu Port said that Taşucu–northern Cyprus sailings had been cancelled. No date has been announced for services to resume, leaving passengers waiting at the port to consider alternative travel arrangements.
The disruption follows the capsizing of Filo Jet off Kyrenia on Sunday, 30 August 2026. The ferry had departed Kyrenia for Taşucu with 259 passengers and eight crew members aboard.
Nine people remanded in custody
The investigation has also widened. A court has remanded nine people connected with the vessel’s operation in custody for three days while police enquiries continue. They include the captain, the seven other crew members and a company official.
Five other people, reportedly including company shareholders and port-department officials, are subject to immediate investigation. Detention or investigation does not establish criminal responsibility, and the cause of the sinking has not yet been determined.
Authorities have said the vessel possessed the required permits and a valid seaworthiness certificate. Investigators are examining reports that part of the ferry’s forward hull fractured before it took on water and overturned.
Search continues at wreck site
Official figures published with the ferry cancellation notice said 241 people were rescued, eight died and 18 remained missing. A Reuters report published on 1 September gave a figure of 20 missing; the reason for the difference has not been clarified.
The wreck lies on the seabed at a depth of approximately 514 metres, beyond the reach of locally available equipment. A specialist Turkish deep-sea team has been sent to examine the vessel and the surrounding seabed as the search continues.
The authorities have also introduced a temporary immigration concession for affected foreign nationals. An Official Gazette notice provides protection from visa-overstay penalties for qualifying passengers unable to leave because sea services could not operate.
