Approximately 250 suites aboard Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' Europa 2 will receive redesigned interiors during a two-week dry dock in Singapore.

The luxury ship is scheduled to enter the yard from 9 to 23 January 2027. Veranda, Ocean, Grand Ocean, Penthouse and Owner Suites will receive revised colours, textiles, lighting and furnishings while retaining the ship's established architectural style.

The work will extend beyond the accommodation. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises also plans to modernise the Atrium and Piano Bar and refresh the Sakura and Elements speciality restaurants.

Nearly every Europa 2 suite will be refreshed

Europa 2 has 251 suites and accommodates a maximum of approximately 500 guests. Nearly all of its accommodation will be included in the 2027 project.

The two Grand Penthouse Suites are the principal exception because they received new interiors during an earlier shipyard period. The forthcoming work will instead concentrate on the ship's remaining major suite categories.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has described the project as a refinement rather than a wholesale transformation. The existing layouts, light woodwork and overall design language will remain, with the new look created through fabrics, upholstery, carpets, lighting and selected furniture.

Hamburg interior-design studio CUBIK³ is working with the cruise line on the implementation. Materials from textile manufacturers including rohi and Kvadrat will introduce different surfaces and textures throughout the accommodation.

Mint and coral for Veranda and Penthouse Suites

Veranda Suites offer approximately 28 square metres of living space, while Penthouse Suites provide around 42 square metres. The categories will continue to share a related design style after the refurbishment.

The existing beige palette will be supplemented or replaced by mint shades and restrained coral accents. Organic patterns and wave-like structures are intended to reflect the maritime surroundings.

Curtains, carpets, sofas, bedspreads, armchairs and upholstered benches will all contribute to the updated colour scheme. Softer transitions and rounded shapes will be used to balance the ship's clean architectural lines.

The light timber elements that already define the suites will be preserved, avoiding the waste and disruption of stripping out interiors that remain in good condition.

Ocean Suites will adopt cooler maritime colours

The 28-square-metre Ocean Suites and larger 42-square-metre Grand Ocean Suites will receive a different visual identity based on blue and grey tones.

Warm brown accents will prevent the interiors from appearing overly cool, while carpets with flowing patterns will reference the movement of the sea. Existing designer furniture will be reupholstered where appropriate rather than automatically replaced.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises says the new treatment should make the accommodation appear lighter and airier while retaining the familiar character valued by returning guests.

New lighting for the Owner Suites

The Owner Suites occupy the forward section of the upper deck and provide approximately 99 square metres of living space, including separate living and sleeping areas.

These suites will receive new lighting fixtures designed to reproduce natural patterns of light and complement different lighting moods during the day.

Furniture changes include round dining tables and other pieces with softer lines. Beige will remain part of the palette but will be combined with subtle blue textile accents to give the living areas a fresher appearance.

The approach demonstrates the overall philosophy of the project: recognisable suites will be updated through coordinated detail rather than entirely rebuilt.

Atrium and restaurants are also included

The suite redesign is the most extensive element of the dry dock, but several important public spaces will also change.

The central Atrium and its Piano Bar will be modernised. The Atrium acts as one of the ship's principal meeting spaces, making its refurbishment particularly visible even to guests whose preferred suite has changed only subtly.

Sakura, Europa 2's sushi restaurant, and Elements, its Asian speciality restaurant, will receive visual upgrades. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has also indicated that further conceptual changes are planned for Elements, although full details have not yet been announced.

Routine maintenance and technical work will take place during the shipyard period alongside the guest-facing improvements. The dry dock is described as Europa 2's fifth scheduled shipyard stay.

Why Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is retaining the existing design

Europa 2 entered service in 2013 with an interior based on light woods, contemporary furniture, open spaces and original art. Works by internationally recognised artists, including Damien Hirst and Gerhard Richter, form part of the onboard collection.

Lisa Wilken, head of luxury cruises at Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, said the ship's architecture and design remained highly relevant. The company therefore sees the dry dock as an opportunity for careful refinement rather than radical change.

That decision also reflects the way many Europa 2 passengers use the ship. Guests may combine consecutive voyages and remain aboard for extended periods, making the suite a temporary home rather than simply a place to sleep.

Every suite aboard Europa 2 has a private veranda, and the vessel operates with a crew-to-guest ratio approaching one to one. The accommodation is therefore central to the ship's ultra-luxury positioning.

Europa 2 will resume sailing from Singapore

The ship is due to complete its final pre-dry-dock voyage in Singapore in early January. Following the yard period, its next published cruise is scheduled to depart Singapore on 24 January 2027.

The 17-day itinerary travels to Fremantle in Western Australia, with destinations including Semarang, Pulau Menyawakan, Bali, Lombok, Komodo, Broome, Exmouth and Geraldton.

Europa 2 will continue through Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and Asia during the first half of 2027 before returning towards Europe later in the year.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is also planning a separate 2027 dry dock for Europa. That ship is scheduled to enter a yard in Bremerhaven during the autumn, with more detailed plans to be announced later.
