Virgin Voyages has rerouted Brilliant Lady away from the Mexican Riviera after deciding that sailing south could place the ship on the more dangerous side of Hurricane Trudy.

The seven-night cruise departed Los Angeles on 17 October 2026 and had been scheduled to visit Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. Those calls have now been replaced by San Francisco, San Diego and Ensenada.

The ship remains due to return to Los Angeles on 24 October as originally planned.

Virgin sends Brilliant Lady north

Virgin warned passengers on 16 October that the itinerary could change as its operations team monitored Hurricane Trudy and the remnants of Hurricane Simon.

In its passenger communication, the cruise line said forecasts for Trudy had varied and that heading south could put Brilliant Lady on the stronger and more dangerous side of the storm. Virgin subsequently confirmed the alternative itinerary taking the ship north along the Californian coast.

The replacement programme includes San Francisco and San Diego in California before a call at Ensenada in Mexico. The original Mexican Riviera ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta have been removed.

Virgin said the safety of passengers and crew was its guiding consideration. It also acknowledged that the replacement was not the itinerary guests had planned and that port availability can be limited when changes are arranged at short notice.

Excursions will be refunded

Shore excursions for the cancelled destinations which were purchased through Virgin Voyages will be refunded automatically to passengers’ onboard accounts.

No additional compensation was detailed in the itinerary-change information reviewed by Deck7. Passengers with independently booked tours or other arrangements should contact the relevant provider and check its cancellation conditions.

Hurricane Trudy tracked off Mexico

The United States National Hurricane Center’s archive confirms that Trudy was a hurricane in the eastern Pacific during the period surrounding the cruise. An advisory issued on 17 October recorded maximum sustained winds of 85 knots, with higher gusts.

Virgin’s decision was based on the potential conditions along the ship’s intended route rather than a suggestion that every original destination would experience the same impacts. Cruise companies routinely alter routes to maintain safe separation from tropical systems, high winds and heavy seas.

Fourth consecutive disrupted Brilliant Lady cruise

Specialist Virgin Voyages publication VV Insider reports that this is the fourth consecutive week in which a Brilliant Lady Mexican Riviera sailing has experienced weather-related disruption.

The sequence began with the ship’s 26 September departure, which was rerouted because of Hurricane Polo. Subsequent Pacific weather systems have continued to affect the ship’s autumn deployment from Los Angeles.

The repeated changes underline the operational difficulty of sailing in the eastern Pacific during the latter part of the hurricane season. They do not mean that every future itinerary will be altered, and passengers booked on later departures should rely on information sent directly by Virgin Voyages.

Brilliant Lady’s West Coast season

Brilliant Lady is the newest vessel in the Virgin Voyages fleet and began its West Coast programme in 2026. The adults-only ship is operating cruises from Los Angeles before continuing its wider North American deployment.

The present cruise has not been cancelled. It remains a seven-night round trip from Los Angeles, but most of the advertised Mexican Riviera itinerary has been replaced by Californian destinations.

Passenger guidance: Guests should check the Virgin Voyages app and communications delivered directly by the cruise line for the latest arrival times, excursion information and any further operational changes. Information supplied directly to passengers takes priority over previously published schedules.
