Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is returning to the Port of Palm Beach one day later than scheduled after severe weather disrupted two consecutive cruises.
The ship had been due to complete a four-night voyage on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. The Port of Palm Beach said conditions would prevent the planned return and advised that Paradise was expected on Wednesday, 28 October, weather permitting.
The change extended the voyage already in progress from four nights to five. It also delayed and shortened the ship's following three-night Bahamas cruise.
Freeport call cancelled
Paradise departed Palm Beach on Friday, 23 October for an itinerary scheduled to visit Key West in Florida and Freeport in the Bahamas.
The ship completed its Key West call, but high winds and dangerous swells prevented the planned visit to Freeport on Monday, 26 October. Paradise spent the day at sea instead.
Shore excursions in Freeport that had been purchased through Margaritaville at Sea were cancelled. Reports based on communications issued aboard the ship said the excursion charges were returned to guests' stateroom accounts.
With the ship unable to enter Palm Beach on Tuesday, the cruise line added a visit to Nassau on what had originally been the voyage's disembarkation day. The additional destination gave guests a replacement Bahamas call while the vessel waited for conditions at its homeport to improve.
Onboard packages extended
Guests already aboard received an additional night on the ship because of the delayed return. Margaritaville at Sea said beverage and Wi-Fi packages purchased for the original voyage would be extended through the extra day without another charge.
Crew members were also available to assist passengers whose flights, hotel bookings or other onward arrangements were affected by the delay.
An extra cruise day can appear attractive, but the unplanned extension may create significant costs for passengers who need to rearrange transport, accommodation, employment or family commitments. Travellers with affected flights were advised to contact their airline, travel provider or insurer directly.
Following cruise shortened
The disruption had the opposite effect for passengers booked to join Paradise on Tuesday, 27 October. Their three-night Nassau Escape could not begin until the ship returned to Palm Beach, making the already short voyage one day shorter.
The original programme included a day at sea on Wednesday, followed by a Nassau visit from 8am to 4pm on Thursday and a return to Palm Beach on Friday, 30 October.
Margaritaville at Sea did not initially publish a complete replacement itinerary, noting that plans could change with the weather and guidance from the port. Passengers were told to follow the line's direct messages for the latest embarkation time and itinerary.
Refund credit and future cruise credit offered
Passengers who continued with the shortened sailing were offered a prorated refund for packages priced by the day, including eligible beverage and Wi-Fi packages.
The cruise line described this as Refund Credit placed on the passenger's stateroom account. It has cash value and can be used towards service charges or gratuities. Any unused balance is due to be returned to the original method of payment approximately seven to ten business days after the voyage ends.
Each stateroom on the affected departing cruise was also offered a $50 Future Cruise Credit towards another Margaritaville at Sea sailing.
Guests who did not want to take the shortened cruise could move their booking to a different departure without paying a rebooking fee. The cruise line advised affected passengers to contact its customer-service team to arrange the change.
The notice did not announce a general refund of the underlying cruise fare for passengers who chose to sail. The confirmed financial arrangements related to qualifying daily packages, the future cruise credit and fee-free rebooking.
Why the ship could not return on schedule
South Florida was experiencing strong winds, high surf, coastal flooding and dangerous marine conditions during the disruption. Those conditions affected cruise operations at several ports along the state's Atlantic coast.
A cruise ship may remain safe at sea while being unable to enter a harbour. Port approaches require precise manoeuvring through confined channels, often with local pilots aboard. High winds, heavy swells or reduced visibility can lead a port authority and ship's master to postpone a movement until it can be completed safely.
The Port of Palm Beach and Margaritaville at Sea both said the safety of guests and crew remained the priority. The port's alert described the Wednesday arrival as weather permitting rather than guaranteeing a specific arrival time.
Paradise operates short Bahamas cruises
Margaritaville at Sea Paradise normally operates short cruises from Palm Beach to the Bahamas, with selected itineraries also visiting Key West.
The 52,926-gross-ton ship entered service in 1991 as Costa Classica and later sailed as Costa neoClassica and Grand Classica. It accommodates approximately 1,300 passengers at double occupancy and can carry more when additional berths are used.
Short itineraries are particularly vulnerable to a one-day delay because there is less time available to absorb disruption. A 24-hour change can remove an entire sea day or port call from the following cruise even when the ship returns to service immediately.
