Spectrum of the Seas is a 169,379gt ocean cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International. Delivered in 2019, it was the first ship in the line's Quantum Ultra class and was developed specifically with the Asian cruise market in mind.
The ship measures 347.1 metres long and 41.4 metres across its moulded beam. It contains 2,137 passenger cabins and accommodates 4,246 guests at double occupancy, supported by approximately 1,551 crew members.
Construction and entry into service
Royal Caribbean ordered the vessel from Meyer Werft as the fourth ship in the wider Quantum series. Construction at Papenburg used yard number S.700, with the first steel cut in August 2017.
Spectrum of the Seas floated out in February 2019 and travelled along the River Ems to begin sea trials the following month. Meyer Werft handed the completed vessel to Royal Caribbean in Bremerhaven on 11 April 2019.
The ship's maiden passenger voyage departed Barcelona on 18 April 2019, beginning an extended repositioning journey towards Asia. Its formal naming ceremony took place in Shanghai on 3 June 2019, with Chinese entertainers Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy serving as godparents.
Quantum Ultra design
Spectrum of the Seas introduced the Quantum Ultra designation, developing the basic design used for Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas. It was subsequently followed by Odyssey of the Seas.
The ship retains prominent Quantum-class features including the North Star observation capsule, which rises approximately 300 feet above sea level; the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator; and SeaPlex, a large indoor sports and entertainment complex.
At the stern, Two70 combines panoramic glazing with performance technology. During the day it operates as an observation lounge, while at night its robotic screens, projection systems and stage support multimedia productions.
Accommodation and Suite Club
The 2,137 cabins range from inside and ocean-view accommodation to balcony rooms and suites. Selected inside cabins use Royal Caribbean's Virtual Balcony system to display an exterior view on a floor-to-ceiling screen.
The ship introduced Royal Caribbean's first private Suite Club enclave. Guests booked in eligible Gold and Silver suite categories receive access to dedicated dining, lounges and outdoor areas, with benefits varying according to the accommodation tier.
Its Ultimate Family Suite extends over two levels and combines family accommodation with features including an in-suite slide, entertainment space and a private cinema room.
Dining and entertainment
Dining was adapted for a mix of international and Asian passengers. Restaurants include the main dining rooms, Windjammer Marketplace, Sichuan Red, Wonderland, Jamie's Italian, Chops Grille, Izumi and Hot Pot.
Star Moment provides private karaoke rooms, while the Royal Theatre and Two70 host production shows and other live entertainment. Additional venues include the Bionic Bar, Music Hall, Casino Royale and a collection of lounges distributed through the ship.
Family facilities include Adventure Ocean children's spaces, an arcade, bumper cars and sports activities within SeaPlex. Outdoor attractions include pools, whirlpools, a FlowRider surf simulator and the upper-deck Sky Pad structure.
East Asia deployment
Spectrum of the Seas was designed to operate principally from China. Its current programme includes voyages from Shanghai and selected departures from Hong Kong, visiting destinations in Japan and South Korea.
Typical itineraries last between four and seven nights and may include ports such as Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Okinawa, Busan and Seogwipo. Deployment and individual calls remain subject to seasonal scheduling and operational changes.
Machinery and environmental systems
The ship uses diesel-electric propulsion. Four main Wärtsilä engines provide a combined output of 67,200kW, while two ABB Azipod units deliver approximately 41MW of propulsion power. Its published service speed is 22 knots.
Meyer Werft fitted the Quantum-series design with an air-lubrication system that releases bubbles beneath the hull to reduce friction and fuel consumption. The ship also incorporates energy-efficient lighting and heat-recovery measures associated with the class.
Spectrum of the Seas is not LNG-powered. Deck7 has not identified sufficiently authoritative current evidence confirming an operational shore-power connection or the precise type and commissioning date of any exhaust-gas cleaning system, so those index fields remain unconfirmed.
Identification
The ship's permanent IMO number is 9778856. Current AIS and vessel-registration records identify MMSI 210563000, call sign 5BDR6 and Cyprus registration, with Limassol recorded as its port of registry.
