Silver Whisper is an intimate all-suite luxury cruise ship operated by Silversea. Completed in Italy in 2001, the ship is a sister vessel to Silver Shadow and has remained part of Silversea’s worldwide fleet for more than 25 years.
Construction and entry into service
The hull of Silver Whisper was constructed by Cantieri Navali Visentini at Donada, Italy, under yard number 982, before the ship was completed by T. Mariotti in Genoa. Technical vessel records give a delivery date in June 2001.
Silver Whisper was formally welcomed into the Silversea fleet at a christening ceremony in Genoa on 18 June 2001. Marzia Lefebvre D’Ovidio served as godmother. The ship began her maiden voyage between Civitavecchia and London on 2 July 2001.
The vessel is registered at Nassau in the Bahamas. Her permanent identifiers are IMO number 9192179, MMSI 308322000 and call sign C6FN7.
Size and capacity
Silver Whisper has a gross tonnage of 28,258gt. Registry-style technical records list an overall length of 186 metres, a beam of 24.8 metres and a summer draught of approximately 6.1 metres. T. Mariotti gives the project length as a rounded 188 metres.
Silversea currently publishes capacity for 392 guests and 302 crew members. Earlier records variously list 382 or 388 guests, reflecting previous configurations and different methods of presenting lower-berth capacity.
The vessel has ten decks in total, of which seven are used by passengers. Approximately 194 ocean-view suites are commonly documented, with most offering private verandas. Suite inventory and capacity can change during refurbishment, so the current cruise-line capacity takes precedence over older specifications.
Shadow-class design
Silver Whisper is the sister ship of Silver Shadow, delivered a year earlier. The pair expanded Silversea’s original small-ship concept while retaining an emphasis on personal service, generous space and access to destinations beyond the practical reach of many larger cruise ships.
The ship’s relatively high space-to-guest ratio and near one-to-one crew ratio remain central to its positioning. Unlike a large resort ship, Silver Whisper concentrates on suites, dining, lounges, wellness facilities and destination-focused itineraries rather than large-scale attractions.
Suites and onboard experience
All guest accommodation aboard Silver Whisper is suite based. Categories include Vista and Veranda suites together with larger Medallion, Silver, Royal, Grand and Owner’s suites. Butler service is included as part of Silversea’s onboard product.
Dining venues include The Restaurant, La Terrazza, La Dame and The Grill. Other spaces include the Panorama Lounge, Observation Lounge, The Bar, Connoisseur’s Corner, the Show Lounge, a casino, pool deck, spa and fitness centre.
The ship’s smaller scale is particularly suited to longer voyages, where the comparatively low number of guests can create a residential atmosphere and allow relationships to develop between passengers and crew.
Refurbishment history
Silversea carried out a major refurbishment of Silver Whisper in December 2018, improving suites and public areas as part of a broader fleet investment programme.
The cruise line’s current ship profile records 2024 as the latest refurbishment year. Deck7 therefore uses 2024 in the ship index while retaining the earlier major project within the vessel’s history.
Machinery and environmental information
Silver Whisper uses two Wärtsilä 8L46B diesel engines with a combined installed output of approximately 15,700kW. The engines drive two controllable-pitch propellers. Technical records give a service speed of around 17.5 knots and a maximum of approximately 20.5 knots.
The vessel was not built to operate on liquefied natural gas. Deck7 has not located a clear current primary source confirming a shore-power connection or the ship’s exhaust-gas cleaning configuration. Those fields remain marked as unknown rather than being inferred from systems installed elsewhere in the Silversea or Royal Caribbean Group fleets.
Itineraries and future role
Silver Whisper continues to operate voyages in destinations including Alaska, French Polynesia and the wider Pacific. Her size allows Silversea to combine major ports with smaller communities and island destinations.
The ship is also scheduled to host Silversea’s 125-day A Pacific Awakening World Cruise in 2029. The voyage is due to sail from San Diego to Southampton through destinations including Hawaii, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia and Japan.
That deployment confirms a continuing long-term role for Silver Whisper beyond her 25th year in service.
