Norwegian Getaway is a Breakaway-class ocean cruise ship operated by Norwegian Cruise Line. Delivered by Meyer Werft in January 2014, the ship introduced the line’s large resort-style design to Miami and remains one of the most recognisable vessels in the Norwegian fleet.

Construction and entry into service

Norwegian Getaway was built at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, as the second ship in the Breakaway class. Her sister ship, Norwegian Breakaway, entered service the previous year.

The vessel was assembled from 73 large steel blocks and delivered to Norwegian Cruise Line in January 2014. After calls in Rotterdam, Southampton and New York, she was christened at Miami on 7 February by the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders and began her maiden passenger voyage on 8 February 2014.

The ship sails under the flag of the Bahamas and is registered at Nassau. Her permanent identifiers are IMO number 9606924, MMSI 311050900 and call sign C6ZJ4.

Size and capacity

Norwegian Cruise Line currently publishes a gross tonnage of 145,655gt and guest capacity of 3,903 at double occupancy. The line lists 2,014 staterooms and approximately 1,646 crew members.

Meyer Werft records a length of 325.7 metres, a moulded beam of 39.7 metres and a design draught of 8.3 metres. Norwegian publishes a larger maximum-width measurement because that figure includes structures extending beyond the moulded hull. Deck7 uses the shipyard’s moulded beam in the comparable ship-index field.

The ship has 18 decks. Published deck counts can differ when technical, crew-only or non-accessible levels are excluded, so Deck7 records the builder’s complete deck figure for consistency.

Breakaway-class design

A defining feature of Norwegian Getaway is The Waterfront, an approximately quarter-mile promenade combining outdoor restaurants, bars and seating with open views of the sea. The design helped move dining and leisure areas closer to the ship’s exterior rather than concentrating them entirely inside the superstructure.

Accommodation ranges from interior, ocean-view and balcony staterooms to studios for solo travellers and suites within The Haven by Norwegian, the line’s private ship-within-a-ship complex.

The ship’s Miami-inspired hull artwork was created by artist David “LEBO” Le Batard and features a large mermaid surrounded by pelicans and marine imagery.

Onboard experience

Norwegian Getaway offers complimentary and speciality restaurants, bars and lounges, pools, a water park, sports facilities and entertainment venues. Signature attractions include The Waterfront, The Haven, Mandara Spa, the multi-level Sports Complex and the Free Fall and Whip water slides.

Dining options include the main dining rooms, Garden Café, O’Sheehan’s Bar & Grill, Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro and Ocean Blue. The precise venue line-up can change between seasons and following refits.

The ship was designed around Norwegian’s Freestyle Cruising model, which avoids fixed dining times and formal dress requirements across much of the onboard experience.

Refurbishment history

Norwegian Getaway completed a substantial bow-to-stern renovation in 2019. The work introduced or refreshed guest spaces and formed part of the company’s Norwegian Edge fleet-modernisation programme.

Norwegian currently identifies 2024 as the vessel’s latest refurbishment year. The company’s present ship page describes the vessel as refurbished in 2024 but does not provide a sufficiently detailed public project list for Deck7 to characterise every element of that work. The index therefore records 2024 without attributing unsupported venue changes to the refit.

Machinery and environmental information

The ship was built with a diesel-electric power plant and two podded propulsion units. Meyer Werft’s delivery specification records total engine output of 62,400kW, propulsion power of 35,000kW and a service speed of approximately 21.5 knots.

Norwegian Getaway is not an LNG-powered vessel. The shipbuilder highlighted heat recovery, hydrodynamic improvements, energy-saving systems and ballast-water treatment among the environmental features incorporated at delivery.

In August 2026, the vessel participated in commissioning work for PortMiami’s shore-power installation at Norwegian Cruise Line’s Terminal B. That provides current ship-specific evidence that Norwegian Getaway is being enabled to connect to landside electricity while berthed, allowing onboard generating engines to be switched off during compatible port calls.

Deck7 has not located a sufficiently authoritative current source confirming the vessel’s individual exhaust-gas cleaning configuration. The EGCS field therefore remains marked as unknown rather than being inferred from installations aboard other Norwegian ships.

Itineraries

Norwegian Getaway has operated in the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as on transatlantic and repositioning voyages. Deployment changes between seasons, so travellers should consult Norwegian Cruise Line’s current schedule for definitive sailing information.
