Celebrity Edge is the lead vessel of Celebrity Cruises’ Edge class and one of the most distinctive ships in the company’s fleet. Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, France, she was delivered in October 2018 and entered service later that year.

Construction and entry into service

Celebrity Edge was developed as the first ship in a new generation for Celebrity Cruises. Construction began under the project designation J34 at the Saint-Nazaire shipyard, which was known as STX France during the early stages of the programme and subsequently resumed the Chantiers de l’Atlantique name.

The ship was delivered on 31 October 2018. After preview sailings, her official inaugural voyage departed on 9 December 2018. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai is the ship’s godmother.

Celebrity Edge is registered at Valletta, Malta. Her permanent maritime identifiers are IMO number 9812705, MMSI 248325000 and call sign 9HA4612.

Size and capacity

Celebrity Cruises publishes a gross tonnage of 130,818gt, a length of 1,004 feet—approximately 306 metres—and a beam of 128 feet, or around 39 metres. Chantiers de l’Atlantique lists a design draught of 8.2 metres and a maximum speed of approximately 22 knots, while Celebrity gives a cruising speed of 21.8 knots.

The cruise line lists Celebrity Edge for 2,918 guests at double occupancy. The ship contains approximately 1,467 accommodation units and normally operates with around 1,320 crew members. Capacity can be higher when additional berths are occupied, so Deck7 uses Celebrity’s published double-occupancy figure as the most consistent comparison with other ships.

Published deck plans show 14 numbered passenger-accessible levels, running from Deck 2 to Deck 16 with Deck 13 omitted from the numbering convention.

A new approach to ship design

Celebrity Edge introduced several concepts that became signatures of the wider Edge series. The most visible is the Magic Carpet, a cantilevered platform attached to the starboard side of the ship. Its position can be changed to support different uses, including dining, drinks, views and tender embarkation.

Many Edge Staterooms feature Infinite Verandas, where a section of the external window lowers electronically and the interior space can be opened towards the sea. Other notable accommodation includes two-storey Edge Villas and the ship’s large Iconic Suites.

Public areas include Eden, the Rooftop Garden, the Grand Plaza, the Resort Deck and The Retreat facilities reserved for suite guests. Celebrity also promotes 29 food-and-beverage venues across the ship.

Propulsion and environmental information

Celebrity Edge uses diesel-electric propulsion and was designed with a parabolic bow intended to reduce resistance through the water. The ship was not built as an LNG-powered vessel.

Royal Caribbean Group describes fleet-wide investment in energy efficiency, shore-power connections and exhaust-gas purification technology. However, the public group information reviewed by Deck7 does not identify the exact current shore-power or exhaust-gas cleaning configuration of Celebrity Edge. Those index fields therefore remain marked as unknown rather than being inferred from broader fleet statements.

Itineraries

Celebrity Edge has operated in regions including the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. In 2024 she became the first Edge-series ship to operate an Alaska season, offering guests views of the region from spaces including Infinite Veranda staterooms, the Magic Carpet and the ship’s outward-facing public areas.

Celebrity’s published programmes continue to feature Celebrity Edge in Alaska, including voyages from Seattle visiting destinations such as Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria.
