Nagasaki

Nagasaki is a major Japanese cruise port with a 410-metre, 12-metre-deep international cruise berth at Matsugae and a second large-ship berth currently under development.

Dock

Nagasaki is one of Japan's best-known international cruise ports, with ships berthing close to the historic city centre at the Matsugae International Cruise Terminal.

The established Matsugae cruise quay is approximately 410m long with 12m water depth, providing a substantial alongside facility for large international cruise ships. The terminal also contains major customs, immigration and quarantine facilities.

Nagasaki Prefecture and Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism are developing Matsugae into a two-berth cruise facility. The project is intended to increase capacity for large cruise ships, but the additional berth was still described as under development in 2026. Deck7 therefore records one operational cruise berth rather than prematurely awarding Nagasaki a second BONUS BERTH.

The terminal's location is excellent for visitors. Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral are nearby, while Nagasaki's tram network provides easy access to Dejima, central shopping areas, Nagasaki Station and the city's wider historic attractions.

Nagasaki has a long maritime history and a naturally sheltered harbour. Its combination of deep-water cruise infrastructure and immediate access to the city has made it one of Japan's important international cruise destinations.

Terminal information

Nagasaki's principal international cruise facility is the Matsugae International Cruise Terminal, close to the city centre and major attractions including Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral. The existing Matsugae cruise quay provides a deep-water berth for large international cruise ships. Nagasaki Prefecture and Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism are currently expanding Matsugae to a two-berth configuration.

Docking and tender information

The established Matsugae international cruise berth has a 410m quay with 12m water depth. A second large-ship berth is under construction as part of the Matsugae two-berth project. Because that additional berth was still described by Nagasaki Prefecture in 2026 as infrastructure being developed, Deck7 records it in technical notes rather than counting it as an operational BONUS BERTH.

Getting around

The terminal is close to the Oura Kaigan-dori tram stop, providing access across central Nagasaki. Taxis, tour coaches and organised excursions operate from the cruise terminal. Nagasaki Station is a short tram or taxi journey away and provides rail connections including the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen.

Accessibility

Matsugae International Terminal is a purpose-built international cruise facility with customs, immigration and quarantine processing. Passengers requiring mobility or boarding assistance should arrange ship-specific support through their cruise line.
