Lindblad Expeditions
Lindblad Expeditions is a specialist expedition cruise operator offering small-ship voyages focused on wildlife, culture, science and active exploration. Its programmes cover all seven continents and range from polar expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic to voyages in the Galápagos, Alaska, Baja California, the South Pacific and a growing collection of river cruises.
The cruise business is part of publicly listed Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc., which is headquartered in New York and trades on Nasdaq under the symbol LIND. The wider group also owns a portfolio of land-based adventure-travel businesses, but its ship-based voyages operate through the Lindblad Expeditions brand.
Guests increasingly encounter the name National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions. This is the consumer-facing identity created through Lindblad's long-term strategic relationship with National Geographic; it does not mean that National Geographic owns Lindblad Expeditions.
History of Lindblad Expeditions
The company's history is closely associated with Lars-Eric Lindblad, a pioneer of modern expedition travel. He led private travellers to Antarctica in 1966 and the Galápagos in 1967, demonstrating that carefully managed tourism could introduce members of the public to remote environments previously visited principally by scientists and explorers.
Lars-Eric had established Lindblad Travel in 1958. His son, Sven-Olof Lindblad, founded the business that became today's Lindblad Expeditions in 1979 and developed programmes in destinations including Baja California, Alaska, the Arctic and the Galápagos.
Lindblad Expeditions began working with National Geographic in 2004. The relationship brought National Geographic experts, photographers, educational material and co-branded programming into selected expeditions while Lindblad retained responsibility for operating the cruise business.
In 2023, the organisations extended and expanded their agreement through 2040. The arrangement provides Lindblad with broad rights to use the National Geographic brand for expedition cruises and river cruises, together with access to additional marketing and distribution through businesses connected with The Walt Disney Company.
National Geographic-Lindblad fleet
Lindblad's current website presents a collection of 24 small expedition ships. This is an operating collection rather than a conventional wholly owned fleet: vessels are owned, leased or chartered according to the destination and programme.
The ships range from 16-guest Galápagos catamarans to purpose-built polar vessels and specialist riverboats. Capacities and facilities therefore vary considerably.

Polar ships
National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution are Lindblad's most advanced purpose-built polar vessels. Both carry up to 138 guests and were constructed to Polar Class 5 standards. Their distinctive X-Bow design is intended to improve performance in challenging seas, while dedicated expedition spaces support Zodiac operations, kayaking, scientific work and wildlife observation.
National Geographic Explorer is an ice-class expedition ship extensively rebuilt for polar and temperate voyages. National Geographic Orion provides another small-ship platform for expedition itineraries in regions including the South Pacific and Europe.
Galápagos fleet
Lindblad has deep historical links with the Galápagos and operates several vessels there. National Geographic Endeavour II is the largest of the current Galápagos ships, while National Geographic Islander II, National Geographic Gemini and the 16-guest National Geographic Delfina provide smaller alternatives.
Galápagos itineraries are supported by naturalist guides and typically combine island landings with activities such as snorkelling, kayaking, glass-bottom boat trips and wildlife observation, subject to the programme and local conditions.
Coastal and regional expedition ships
National Geographic Quest and National Geographic Venture are 100-guest sister ships purpose-built for expeditions in the Americas. National Geographic Sea Bird and National Geographic Sea Lion are smaller, shallow-draught vessels able to reach channels and anchorages inaccessible to larger cruise ships.
The chartered collection adds region-specific vessels such as the Indonesian expedition yacht Aqua Blu, the square-rigged Sea Cloud II and Greg Mortimer.
River cruises
River travel has become a prominent part of Lindblad's expansion. Its collection includes Amazon, Mekong, Nile, Brahmaputra and Scottish canal voyages as well as the new European river programme.
In August 2026, Lindblad began its first European river-cruise operation aboard the 120-guest Connect. The inaugural itinerary explored the waterways of Holland and Belgium, with further Rhine sailings following during the season.
Sister ship Evolve is scheduled to expand the European operation in 2027, including festive-season voyages associated with the Danube and its Christmas markets.
Other river vessels are selected for their regions. Delfin II and Delfin III explore the Upper Amazon; The Jahan sails the Mekong; Oberoi Philae and Sun Goddess operate on the Nile; and Charaidew II is used on India's Brahmaputra.
Onboard and expedition experience
Lindblad's product is built around guided exploration rather than a standardised resort-style cruise experience. The exact facilities differ from ship to ship, but voyages are accompanied by expedition staff selected for the destination. Teams can include naturalists, historians, scientists, cultural specialists, undersea experts and photography instructors.
Activities vary by region and may include Zodiac cruises, hiking, kayaking, snorkelling, wildlife observation, cycling and cultural visits. Weather, wildlife, permissions and safety considerations can require expedition leaders to alter the published plan.
National Geographic experts join selected departures, while trained photography instructors help guests improve their images in the field. Several ships also provide tools such as remotely operated underwater cameras, hydrophones, microscopes and video equipment that allow discoveries to be shared onboard.
Dining and accommodation differ substantially across the collection because the ships are not members of a single standard class. Published inclusions should therefore be checked against the individual itinerary rather than assumed to apply fleetwide.
Destinations
National Geographic-Lindblad itineraries reach all seven continents. Core regions include Antarctica, the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, the Galápagos, Alaska, Baja California, Central America, the Amazon, the South Pacific, Indonesia, Japan, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
The addition of specialist river vessels has extended the company's reach into mainland destinations where conventional expedition ships cannot operate. This allows Lindblad to apply its expert-led model to historic cities, rural landscapes and inland waterways as well as remote marine environments.
Responsible travel and conservation
Lindblad describes responsible travel as a founding principle. The Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Fund was established in 2008 and supports conservation, education and scientific projects. Lindblad reported in 2026 that the fund had contributed more than $24 million to relevant initiatives.
Specific environmental measures vary between ships and destinations. The company has also supported scientific research, educators and local conservation organisations, while expedition staff interpret the environmental and cultural significance of the places visited.
Ownership and leadership
Lindblad Expeditions is operated within Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc., a New York-headquartered public company. The parent business combines the cruise brand with land-experience companies including Natural Habitat Adventures, Off the Beaten Path, DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co. and Classic Journeys.
Natalya Leahy has served as Chief Executive Officer of Lindblad Expeditions Holdings since January 2025. Founder Sven-Olof Lindblad remains closely connected with the company as Co-Chair of its Board.
The National Geographic relationship is a long-term brand and operating collaboration. Lindblad remains a separately owned company and is not a subsidiary of National Geographic or The Walt Disney Company.
