Holland America Line is a premium cruise operator owned by Carnival Corporation Ltd. Founded in Rotterdam in 1873, the company now operates 11 ships visiting more than 450 ports in over 110 countries and territories.

Headquartered in Seattle, Holland America combines its Dutch maritime heritage with destination-led itineraries, traditional shipboard service, live music, culinary programmes and voyages ranging from short regional cruises to extended Legendary and Grand Voyages.

History of Holland America Line

Holland America Line was formally established on 18 April 1873 as the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij, or Netherlands-American Steamship Company. It grew from the earlier Plate, Reuchlin & Co. shipping business and operated passenger and cargo services between Rotterdam and North America.

The company's first ship, Rotterdam, completed its inaugural Atlantic crossing from the Netherlands to New York in 1873. Holland America became an important carrier of European emigrants, transporting large numbers of passengers through its Rotterdam terminal and across the Atlantic to the United States.

The Holland-Amerika Lijn name came into official use during the 1890s. Its ships maintained scheduled transatlantic services while the company also developed leisure voyages. Holland America dates its first cruise to 1895, when Rotterdam II sailed from Rotterdam to Copenhagen for the opening of the Kiel Canal.

Air travel gradually displaced scheduled passenger liners during the decades after the Second World War. Holland America ended its regular transatlantic passenger service and concentrated increasingly on cruising, eventually moving its principal operations to the United States.

Carnival Corporation acquired Holland America Line in 1989. The brand retained its name and identity while becoming part of Carnival's growing portfolio of cruise businesses.

Holland America celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023. The company continues to reuse historic ship names including Rotterdam, Statendam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Volendam and Zaandam, connecting new vessels with earlier generations of the fleet.

Current Holland America Line fleet

Holland America Line currently operates 11 ships across four principal design groups.

Pinnacle class

  • Koningsdam — entered service in 2016 as the first Pinnacle-class ship.
  • Nieuw Statendam — entered service in 2018.
  • Rotterdam — entered service in 2021 and is the seventh Holland America ship to carry the name.

Signature class

  • Eurodam — entered service in 2008.
  • Nieuw Amsterdam — entered service in 2010 as the fourth ship to carry the name.

Vista class

  • Zuiderdam — entered service in 2002 as the first Vista-class vessel.
  • Oosterdam — entered service in 2003.
  • Westerdam — entered service in 2004.
  • Noordam — entered service in 2006.

Rotterdam-class ships

  • Volendam — entered service in 1999.
  • Zaandam — entered service in 2000.

The fleet ranges from the approximately 61,000gt Volendam and Zaandam to Pinnacle-class vessels of around 99,500gt. Capacities and facilities vary considerably, making the individual ship an important consideration when choosing an itinerary.

Former ships now sailing for Fred. Olsen

Holland America sold Amsterdam and the previous Rotterdam to Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in 2020. They subsequently became Bolette and Borealis.

The transfer preserved two late-1990s Holland America vessels under a new operator. Many elements of their original design remain recognisable, although Fred. Olsen has adapted the ships to its own product and passenger market.

Destinations and itineraries

Holland America visits more than 450 ports in over 110 countries and territories. Its programmes include Alaska, the Caribbean, Europe, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Canada and New England, Mexico, Panama Canal, Hawaii, South America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

The line operates from a broad selection of seasonal homeports, including Seattle, Vancouver, San Diego, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Boston, Quebec City, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Dover, Barcelona, Athens, Sydney and Singapore.

Holland America's ships are generally smaller than the latest generation of mass-market resort vessels. This allows the fleet to combine major cruise destinations with less frequently visited ports and scenic routes.

Alaska cruises and cruisetours

Holland America has operated in Alaska since 1947, giving the company a longer history in the region than any other current cruise line. Its programme includes Inside Passage cruises, Glacier Bay visits and one-way itineraries connecting Vancouver with Whittier.

Alaska cruises can be combined with overland cruisetours into the interior and Yukon. Holland America owns the Holland America Denali Lodge and uses rail, coach and hotel arrangements to connect the coast with destinations including Denali and Fairbanks.

Not every Alaska itinerary visits the same glaciers or ports. Guests should check the individual sailing when comparing Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier, College Fjord, Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway and overland components.

Legendary Voyages and Grand Voyages

Legendary Voyages are extended cruises generally lasting between 25 and 59 days. They are designed to explore a region in greater depth and frequently operate roundtrip from a North American homeport, reducing or eliminating the need for a long-distance flight at one end of the journey.

Grand Voyages and world cruises extend beyond 60 days. Programmes can include a full circumnavigation, extensive South America and Antarctica itineraries, Africa or long Pacific voyages.

These cruises typically include additional destination programming and shipboard events. Exact inclusions, ports and overnight stays vary by voyage and year.

Dining

Holland America places a strong emphasis on food and destination-influenced menus. Included choices normally include the main Dining Room, Lido Market, Dive-In and 24-hour room service, although availability and charges can vary.

Speciality venues across the fleet include Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto and Tamarind. Selected ships or sailings also offer Morimoto By Sea, Rudi's Sel de Mer and other chef-led experiences. Pinnacle-class ships provide the widest overall selection, while smaller vessels have fewer dedicated restaurants.

The cruise line works with a group of culinary ambassadors and uses regional ingredients and dishes connected with its destinations. Its fresh-fish programme is intended to source fish close to the places visited and serve it on board within a short period of collection.

Music and entertainment

Live music is a central part of Holland America's onboard identity. Depending on the ship, venues can include Rolling Stone Lounge, Billboard Onboard, the World Stage, Ocean Bar and other lounges hosting bands, pianists and vocalists.

Entertainment varies between ship classes and can include production shows, comedy, destination presentations, game shows, classical performances and enrichment programmes. The larger Pinnacle-class ships generally provide the most extensive purpose-built music and performance spaces.

Holland America also offers supervised Kids Club activities for children and teenagers on applicable sailings. The number of participating families can vary considerably by itinerary and season.

Have It All and Club Orange

Have It All is an optional fare package combining selected benefits. Depending on the promotion and booking conditions, these can include shore-excursion credit, a drinks package, speciality dining and Wi-Fi.

Club Orange is a paid premium programme offering benefits such as priority access, an upgraded stateroom where available, a dedicated concierge service and additional dining arrangements. On Pinnacle-class ships, Club Orange has a separate dining venue; other ships may provide an exclusive menu or section within the main dining room.

Package prices, limits and inclusions can change. Guests should check the terms attached to their precise booking rather than relying on information for another market or sailing season.

RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay

RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay is Holland America's private-island destination in the Bahamas. Formerly marketed simply as Half Moon Cay, the island has beaches, water activities, horse riding, food venues, cabanas and protected natural areas.

The destination is also used by other Carnival Corporation brands. A programme of enhancements extending through 2026 includes new food and beverage facilities, beach areas, pickleball courts and additional guest amenities.

Nearly all Holland America Caribbean cruises in selected seasons include a visit, although calls remain subject to weather and operational conditions because ships use tenders rather than docking directly alongside the island.

Holland America Evolution

Holland America Evolution is a multiyear refurbishment programme announced in April 2026. The company describes it as the largest fleet update in its 153-year history.

Six ships are included: Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam, Noordam, Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam. Planned work includes refreshed accommodation, new suite categories, updated public rooms and the introduction of selected features associated with the newer Pinnacle-class vessels.

Oosterdam is scheduled to become the first upgraded ship to sail, in autumn 2027. Zuiderdam follows with refreshed deck plans applying to cruises from March 2028. Timings and specific changes differ by vessel.

Ownership and leadership

Holland America Line is owned by Carnival Corporation Ltd., whose other cruise brands include Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Cunard, P&O Cruises, AIDA Cruises and Seabourn.

Beth Bodensteiner has served as president of Holland America Line since December 2024. She oversees the brand's 11 ships and global business and also has executive responsibility for Seabourn.
