Azamara is an upmarket small-ship cruise line specialising in destination-intensive itineraries, extended stays and overnight calls. The company operates four closely related R-class ships: Azamara Journey, Azamara Quest, Azamara Pursuit and Azamara Onward.
Each vessel carries up to approximately 700 guests, allowing Azamara to visit smaller ports that may be inaccessible to the largest cruise ships. The line combines this scale with longer time ashore, late-night departures, country-intensive cruises and cultural events connected with the destinations visited.
Azamara is headquartered in Miami, Florida. It has operated as an independent cruise company owned by private-equity firm Sycamore Partners since March 2021.
History of Azamara
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., now Royal Caribbean Group, established Azamara in 2007. The new brand began with two former Renaissance Cruises R-class vessels, which entered service as Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest.
The business was initially called Azamara Cruises before adopting the Azamara Club Cruises name in 2009. This reflected an increased emphasis on inclusive amenities, destination immersion and a club-like onboard atmosphere.
The fleet remained at two ships until 2018, when the former Adonia joined as Azamara Pursuit. The addition expanded the company's ability to operate longer voyages and serve more destinations while retaining the same intimate R-class platform.
In January 2021, Royal Caribbean Group agreed to sell Azamara to Sycamore Partners for $201 million. The transaction, including the three-ship fleet and associated intellectual property, was completed on 19 March 2021.
Sycamore announced the acquisition of a fourth R-class vessel before the transaction closed. The former Pacific Princess subsequently became Azamara Onward and entered service for the company in May 2022.
The line now trades as Azamara or Azamara Cruises. Its four sister ships support a consistent small-ship model while offering differences in accommodation, restaurants, bars and entertainment following successive refits.
Current Azamara fleet
Azamara currently operates four R-class cruise ships. Each is approximately 30,000gt, measures about 181 metres in length and accommodates up to approximately 700 guests, depending on the ship and published capacity measure.
- Azamara Journey — built in 2000 and sailing for Azamara since the brand's launch in 2007.
- Azamara Quest — built in 2000 and also part of the original two-ship Azamara fleet.
- Azamara Pursuit — built in 2001 and introduced by Azamara in 2018 following an extensive refit.
- Azamara Onward — built in 1999, acquired after Azamara became independent and introduced in 2022 as the fourth ship.
The vessels were originally constructed as part of the eight-ship Renaissance Cruises R-class series. Their relatively compact dimensions allow them to berth in ports and travel along waterways that cannot accommodate many newer resort ships.
Although the four ships share a common basic design, facilities and cabin configurations are not identical. Guests should consult the deck plan for the individual vessel and sailing when comparing suites, restaurants and public spaces.
Destination Immersion
Azamara describes its core approach as Destination Immersion. Rather than using every evening to sail towards the next port, itineraries frequently include later departures and overnight stays that let guests remain ashore after the main daytime visitor period.
The smaller ships can call at established cruise ports as well as less frequently visited harbours. Itineraries span all seven continents and include the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and selected expedition-style destinations.
Country-intensive voyages concentrate on one nation or a closely connected group of destinations. This format may combine major cities with smaller regional ports and is intended to provide more depth than an itinerary covering several countries in quick succession.
Azamara also offers Grand Voyages, world cruises and other extended sailings. These can combine several geographical regions, multiple overnights and long sequences of ports into one continuous itinerary.
AzAmazing Evenings and cultural events
AzAmazing Evenings are complimentary destination events staged on selected voyages. They can include music, dance, historic venues and other performances intended to connect guests with the culture of the place being visited.
The programme varies by cruise length and itinerary. Azamara's expanded 2027 schedule contains 121 cultural experiences: 101 events ashore and 20 onboard Destination Celebrations. The company says cruises of nine nights or longer are scheduled to feature an AzAmazing Evening ashore, while seven- and eight-night sailings receive an onboard cultural event.
Deck7 has further details in Azamara adds 36 new AzAmazing Evenings for 2027.
Individual events can change because of local availability, weather or operational requirements. Guests should check the inclusions and arrangements shown for their specific departure.
Dining and drinks
Included dining normally centres on Discoveries Restaurant, the Windows Café buffet, The Patio pool grill and in-room service. Mosaic Café serves coffee and light refreshments, while venues and opening hours vary by ship and itinerary.
Prime C is the fleet's steakhouse and Aqualina specialises in Italian-influenced cuisine. These restaurants generally carry an additional charge for guests in standard accommodation, while selected suite categories include speciality-dining benefits.
Azamara Onward introduced Atlas Bar, a cocktail venue created for the fourth ship. Azamara Forward is bringing new and reimagined food-and-drink spaces to further vessels, so the precise onboard selection will increasingly differ during the refurbishment rollout.
Standard cruise fares include selected beer, wine and spirits, bottled water, soft drinks, speciality coffees and teas. Premium drinks packages and upgraded suite inclusions are available. Limits and brands can change, and the applicable booking terms should be checked before travel.
Onboard experience
Azamara's ships are designed around lounges, open decks, dining rooms and smaller shared spaces rather than large-scale attractions such as water parks or roller coasters. The experience is generally adult-oriented, although the line does not operate as an adults-only cruise company.
Entertainment can include live music, cabaret productions, guest performers, enrichment talks and destination programming. The Cabaret Lounge is the main performance space, while the Living Room hosts daytime activities and evening entertainment.
Wellness facilities include a fitness centre, salon and The Sanctum Spa. Each ship also has a pool deck, jogging track and quiet indoor and outdoor areas. There is no dedicated children's club, making the product more naturally suited to adults and independently minded travellers.
Included amenities in standard accommodation normally comprise onboard gratuities, selected alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, unlimited self-service laundry and a complimentary cultural event on applicable voyages. Some ports also offer a shuttle service where local arrangements permit.
Azamara Circle
Azamara Circle is the company's loyalty programme. Members progress through six principal tiers: Adventurer, Explorer, Discoverer, Discoverer Plus, Discoverer Platinum and Discoverer Platinum Elite.
Benefits can include onboard booking savings, internet minutes, laundry, priority services, gatherings and other recognition depending on tier. Programme rules and benefits may be revised, so returning guests should consult the current terms before relying on a particular entitlement.
Azamara Forward fleet enhancements
Azamara Forward is a multiyear fleet enhancement programme announced in March 2026. It includes refreshed public spaces and accommodation, new suites, updated restaurants and bars, revised wellness facilities and additional entertainment.
Azamara Quest is scheduled to become the first completed ship, debuting the Azamara Forward experience on a sailing departing 18 December 2026. Planned changes include new Panorama Suites, redesigned speciality dining and bar concepts and wider shipboard upgrades.
Azamara Onward is due to follow after a 2027 dry dock, returning to service with the new features on 16 October 2027. Timelines for Azamara Journey and Azamara Pursuit are to be announced.
Because the programme is being introduced in stages, guests travelling during the transition should verify which enhancements have reached their chosen ship and sailing date.
Ownership and leadership
Azamara is owned by Sycamore Partners, a New York-based private-equity firm specialising in consumer, retail and distribution-related investments. The company has been separate from Royal Caribbean Group since completion of the sale in March 2021.
Dondra Ritzenthaler is chief executive officer of Azamara Cruises. A travel-industry executive with four decades of experience, she was named incoming CEO in November 2023 and assumed the role in May 2024.
The executive leadership team also covers commercial, financial, hotel operations, marine operations, information technology, legal, human-resources and product functions. Shipboard command and hotel teams vary by vessel and assignment.
