Riviera Travel has temporarily paused new bookings for selected Rhine and Danube cruises departing through 13 September 2026 as uncertainty over European river levels continues.
The UK operator said the stop-sale measure was introduced to ensure it only accepts new reservations for holidays capable of delivering the river-cruise experience passengers expect.
The decision does not amount to a blanket cancellation of Riviera's forthcoming Rhine and Danube programme. Most scheduled departures are expected to operate, although some voyages will follow revised itineraries as the company responds to navigational conditions.
Temporary sales pause until mid-September
Riviera confirmed the measure to travel-trade publication TTG on 25 August. The company said Rhine levels were showing signs of improvement but that sufficient uncertainty remained to justify a cautious approach.
New sales for the affected departures have therefore been paused through 13 September. Guests who already hold reservations have not automatically had their cruises cancelled and should continue to follow updates supplied directly by Riviera or their travel adviser.
The distinction is important: a stop-sale prevents additional bookings while capacity and operating conditions are assessed. It does not, by itself, mean that every existing booking within the period has been withdrawn.
Most cruises continuing with changes
Riviera's latest position follows a difficult summer for river cruising. Earlier in August, the operator confirmed that 10 European departures had been cancelled and six others altered as exceptionally low water affected sections of the Rhine, Danube, Main and Moselle.
The latest update indicates that most forthcoming sailings are still planned to proceed. Depending on conditions, changes can include adjusted ports, altered timings, transfers or other revisions intended to keep cruises operating safely.
River levels can vary significantly between different stretches of the same waterway. Rainfall may also take several days to move through a river system, meaning conditions at individual ports can improve or deteriorate after the weather itself has changed.
New 72-hour outlook for passengers
Riviera has introduced an enhanced River Cruise Update Centre providing a 72-hour outlook and information about how current conditions may affect individual departures.
The operator said its monitoring combines readings from official river gauges with rainfall mapping, weather forecasts and its own systems covering the Rhine and Danube catchments.
Riviera has also published a Five-Point Promise setting out how it intends to manage disruption. The company says it will minimise coach journeys and will not replace substantial sections of a planned river voyage with repeated long-distance coach travel simply to keep an itinerary running.
If conditions prevent the operator from providing what it considers a genuine river-cruise experience, it says affected customers will instead receive clear alternative options.
Existing passengers contacted directly
Riviera said passengers and travel advisers are contacted directly when a sailing requires changes. Anyone with an existing booking should rely on the latest information issued for that specific departure rather than assuming that conditions elsewhere on the Rhine or Danube apply to their voyage.
The situation remains fluid, and departures beyond the temporary sales-pause period could still be reviewed if river conditions require further action.
